中国地质（北京）1952年由北京、清华、天津和唐山铁道等院校的地质系（科）合并组建的北京地质发展而成，是一所特色鲜明、底蕴深厚的。1970年迁校，1978年在邓小平同志直接关怀下，在北京原校址恢复办学。1987年成立中国地质，在京汉两地相对独立办学，是我国首批试办研究生院的33所高校，并首批进入“211工程”、“985”学科创新平台建设行列。2000年2月，中国地质由国土资源部整体划转管理。2005年3月，总部撤销，京汉两地独立办学。
学校始终弘扬地质报国优良传统，肩负社会主义建设开路先锋的光荣使命，培养了大批经济建设急需的地质专门人才，为新中国工业的腾飞和地质事业的发展做出了不可磨灭的贡献，淬炼出了愈挫弥坚、刚健勇毅的鲜明品格，形成了“爱祖国、能吃苦、做先锋、敢探索”的价值追求。
中国地质（北京）现有16个、41个本科招生专业，16个一级学科博士学位授权点，33个一级学科硕士学位授权点，14个专业学位授权类别。全日制在校生16466人，其中本科生8389人、硕士研究生6177人，博士研究生1682人，留学生和港澳台侨学生218人。学校占地面积525843平米，在周口店、北戴河、河北平泉建有实习基地。
中国地质（北京）是一所以地质、资源、环境为主要特色的研究型，涵盖理、工、文、管、经、法等多个学科。地质学、地质资源与地质工程2个学科入选“双”建设学科、2个学科在第四轮学科评估中获得A+。地球科学、工程学、环境/生态学、材料科学、化学、计算机科学6个学科领域进入ESI前1，其中地球科学进入ESI前1‰。
